It’s your first global website launch! Awwwww. This is an exciting time for you and your company as you begin to explore new international waters. Taking websites global is our bread and butter, and in our Q1 2013 newsletter article, we shared six tips from our experience to help make it a success. Here’s a quick rundown of the top three:

1. Make sure you are ready for your languages, and that your languages are ready for you. Not only will your website read differently in each language, but your users in each country will interact differently with it, especially when entering things like currency, time, and date formats. Each language may function more like an individual site than an offshoot of your English copy — that means that your site management efforts could be multiplied by the number of languages you have. Is your content management system (CMS) up to the challenge? Understanding what will change and how before translation starts may save you some headaches once you’ve got the translated sites ready to go.

2. Sometimes, less is truly more. Sure, you want your international users to have the same experience that your domestic users do. But when you take a closer look, is all of the content necessary? Take a page from Breastcancer.org’s global website launch and rank your content from most to least important, with your global users in mind. Not only will this focus attention on what’s truly important, but it will help streamline your translation budget, too.

3. Glossary + Style Guide 4EVR. Your two best friends for any translation project, and especially for your first one, are the glossary and style guide. These two documents carry your company’s lingo, style, and tone straight to the linguists responsible for recreating it, and ensure that all team members understand what to say and how to say it.

For more detail on these tips, plus the ones we didn’t mention, check out our full newsletter article. Our website translation page and top 10 tips for website translation may also be helpful. We hope they’re useful, and happy launch!
